West Hertel Academy evacuated, gas line struck two blocks away

West Hertel Academy was evacuated Wednesday morning after a gas line was hit two blocks away from the school on Janice Street, school and National Fuel officials said.

According to scanner dispatches, firefighters reported the odor of gas and were opening windows to ventilate the school.

School officials reported on Twitter that students and staff were going to be at Grabiarz School #79 while National Fuel worked on the gas line.

"National Fuel crews are onsite making the needed repair. The kids are back in the school," said a National Fuel spokesperson.
