Mother in custody after 6-year-old stabbed on Purdy Street

A 6-year-old boy was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital on Wednesday morning after he was stabbed on Purdy Street, Buffalo Police Capt. Jeff Rinaldo said.

The boy's 33-year-old mother was taken into police custody, Rinaldo said.

The child suffered what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. He had stab wounds and slash wounds to his torso and arms.

The mother, whose name has not been released, was on the porch when police arrived and had what officers believed to be self-inflicted stab wounds, Rinaldo said.

Buffalo police and firefighters were called to a two-unit house at 14 Purdy just before 8 a.m.

Firefighters dispatched to the scene just south of East Utica Street and west of Jefferson Avenue were told a woman was outside the home threatening to harm herself, according to fire department radio transmissions.

Police have recovered a weapon, Rinaldo said. The mother was being taken to police headquarters for questioning.
