Downtown craft cocktail stalwart Buffalo Proper has closed

Buffalo Proper, a prominent Buffalo cocktail bar, held its last service Saturday.

Owner Jon Karel said the closing was forced by financial shortfalls.

"I'm sorry to everybody that we let down," said Karel. "I really appreciate everybody that has supported us for the last five years. It's been an honor and privilege to serve everyone."

Karel opened the restaurant at 333 Franklin St. in 2014, with other partners, operating the last couple of years as sole proprietor. Poor business decisions have left him deeply in debt, he said.

In 2016, Karel and then-chef Edward Forster were invited to present dinner at the James Beard House, a famed Manhattan culinary showcase.

Karel, a leading figure in the Buffalo craft cocktail field since his stint at Vera Pizzeria, said he intended to find work and try to avoid bankruptcy.

"I'm just doing my best to try to figure out what my options are, to try to do the best I can to pay people back," Karel said Monday afternoon.
