Certo Brothers, 107-year-old Buffalo beer distributor, is sold

Certo Brothers Distributing Co., a century-old beer distributor in West Seneca, has been sold to a Rochester-based distributor.

Employees were informed Friday afternoon that the company had been sold to Wright Beverage Distributing of Rochester.

Certo Brothers will cease operations at its North America Drive facility Jan. 10, employees said.

The Teamsters Union Local 264, which represents Certo's 82 warehouse workers and drivers, has reached out to the company to negotiate retention and severance, according to union President Brian Dickman. He was not sure whether Wright would offer jobs to the Certo employees.

"I have very limited information but my understanding is that they will no longer operate the facility" on North America Drive, Dickman said.

Wright Beverage did not buy the building as part of the sale, he said.

Wright Beverage Distributing was started in 1953. In 1977, the company was bought by one of its co-founders' sons, Claude Wright, who is chief executive officer today. It has operations in LeRoy, Rochester, Seneca Falls and on Lawrence Bell Drive, with more than 400 employees.

Founded in 1912, Certo Brothers distributes such brands as Coors Light, Labatt and Molson. In addition to beer, it distributes wine and spirits. Peter I. Certo, who served as the company's president and chairman, died in 2017.

Certo Brothers and Wright Brothers could not immediately be reached for comment.

Certo Brothers has about 200 employees.
