UB's 2019 football schedule, game by game

Robert Morris

Date: Aug. 29

Site: UB Stadium

Time/TV: 7 p.m./ESPN Plus

UB opens the season with its first meeting in program history against Robert Morris, an FCS opponent from suburban Pittsburgh that went 2-9 in 2018. Terence Stephens, a former Bowling Green running back, was the Colonials’ leading rusher in 2018 with 793 yards on 169 carries and their leading kickoff returner, averaging 25.8 yards on 21 returns.

Penn State

Date: Sept. 7

Site: Beaver Stadium, University Park, Pa.

Time/TV: 7:30 p.m./Fox

The Bulls go from facing an FCS opponent to playing against of the nation’s blue-blood programs, and Penn State leads the all-time series 2-1. Penn State is No. 15 in the Preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll, but like UB, it is a team in transition. The Nittany Lions went 9-4 in 2018 but lost three-year starting quarterback Trace McSorley. Penn State returns an experienced defense that includes linebacker Micah Parsons (83 tackles, five quarterback hurries in 2018).

Liberty’s two-year Football Bowl Subdivision reclassification process was approved by the NCAA earlier this month. UB is 0-1 against Liberty, which was 6-6 in 2018. Quarterback Stephen Calvert threw for 3,068 yards and 21 touchdowns, and was intercepted 18 times, one year after throwing for 3,363 yards and 29 touchdowns during the Flames’ FCS/FBS transition year in 2017.

UB is 13-4 all-time against Temple and faces the Owls for the second time in two seasons. They’ll play a familiar opponent when they host the Owls; former Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey took the same job with Temple in January. Senior linebacker Shaun Bradley is Temple’s top returning tackler (78), as the Owls finished 8-5 in 2018.

Miami (Ohio)

Date: Sept. 28

Site: Yager Stadium, Oxford, Ohio


UB opens its Mid-American Conference schedule on the road against the RedHawks, who were 6-6, 6-2 in the MAC in 2018. The RedHawks lead the all-time series 14-7, but UB has won five of the last seven meetings against Miami. Wide receiver Jack Sorenson led the RedHawks in receiving with 53 catches for 742 yards and two touchdowns in 2018.

The Bobcats handed the Bulls their worst MAC loss last season, a 52-17 decision, in Athens, Ohio. It kept the Bulls from clinching the MAC East Division until the final game of the regular season. The Bobcats went 9-4, 6-2 MAC in 2018 and are the preseason pick to win the conference title. Quarterback Nathan Rourke led the MAC in all-purpose yards in 2018 (2,434 passing, 860 rushing).

Site: InfoCision Stadium, Akron, Ohio


UB will play its third MAC East opponent in as many games when it returns from its bye week. The Zips are led by first-year coach Tom Arth. Akron was 4-8, 2-6 MAC in 2018, but leads the all-time series 11-7. Quarterback Kato Nelson, a redshirt junior, threw for 2,329 yards and 15 touchdowns but was intercepted eight times on 178 of 342 passing in 11 games in 2018.

Central Michigan

Date: Oct. 26

Site: UB Stadium


Central Michigan visits UB Stadium for the first time since October of 2014, and arrives with new coach Jim McElwain, the former Florida and Colorado State head coach who was a receivers coach in 2018 at Michigan. UB is 2-7 all-time against the Chippewas, who were 1-11, 0-8 last year. Defensive back Devonni Reed, a redshirt sophomore, had 97 tackles (62 solo) and three pass breakups in 2018 for the Chippewas.

Eastern Michigan

Date: Nov. 2

Site: Rynearson Stadium, Ypsilanti, Mich.


Buffalo plays at Eastern Michigan for the first time since October of 2014, and the Bulls are 2-6 all-time against the Eagles. Eastern Michigan was 7-6, 5-3 MAC in 2018, and defensive back Vince Calhoun was an All-MAC third-team selection who had 84 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass breakups last season.

Kent State

Date: Nov. 14

Site: Dix Stadium, Kent, Ohio

Time/TV: 7 p.m./CBS Sports Network

UB is 13-11 against Kent State, and UB has won four of the last five meetings against the Golden Flashes. Kent State was 2-10, 1-7 MAC in 2018, and quarterback Woody Barrett, a redshirt junior, was 229 for 390 passing for 2,339 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was intercepted nine times.

Toledo was picked to win the MAC West in the preseason media poll after finishing 7-6, 5-3 MAC in 2018. UB is 3-7 all-time against the Rockets. Quarterback Mitchell Guadagni returns after throwing for 1,053 yards and 13 touchdowns in seven games, but missed part of last season due to injuries, including a season-ending broken collarbone Oct. 25 at Western Michigan.

Bowling Green

Date: Nov. 29

Time/TV: TBA/ESPNU, CBS Sports Network or ESPN3

UB is 5-11 all-time against Bowling Green and will face its third MAC opponent with a new coach, as Scot Loeffler takes over a Falcons program that was 3-9, 2-6 in 2018. Loeffler was previously at Boston College as an offensive coordinator and deputy head coach. Senior defensive back Jerry McBride had 106 tackles (67 solo) in 12 games for the Falcons in 2018.
