Jon Hoecker (Brook-Lea CC, Rochester) won his third WNYPGA Section Championship at the Whispering Woods Golf Club in Erie, Pa., on Tuesday with a 3-over 147.
It was his first sectional title since 2008; his first came in 1988. Hoecker also won the Africa 6000 International Pro Am Charity Classic in Erie, Pa., in June and took first in the WNYPGA Senior Championship last year at Chautauqua Golf Club.
Chris Zumpano (Oak Hill CC, Rochester) took second with a 4-over 148 and Michael O’Connor (The Kahlwa Club, Erie) finished in third place with a 5-over 149.
Hoecker, Zumpano and O’Connor each qualified for the 2020 PGA Professional Championship to be held at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas, next April.
Dwayne Randall (Bartlett CC, Olean) and Kirk Stauffer (PGA Life Member) both shot a 150 and tied for fourth. Tim Falkner (Crag Burn CC, East Aurora) shot a 151 to take sixth.
Those three were named as alternates for the PGA tournament.
Other WNYers with high finishes include Rob Krajewski (Glen Oak GC, Williamsville) who tied for seventh with a 152, J.A. Sutherland (CC of Buffalo, Amherst) who tied for 10th with a 153 and Bobby Hogan (River Oaks CC, Tonawanda) who finished in 12th with a 154.
Sicard in first with 2-over
Mary Sicard (Queensbury CC, Queensbury) is in first place in the NYS Women’s Senior Championship with a 2-over 74 after the first round at Bristol Harbor CC in Canandaigua.
Sicard has a three-stroke lead over second place Patricia Mayne (West Turnpike GC, Guilderland) who has a 5-over 77 after one round.
Tied for third place are Carolyn Mancini (Binghamton CC, Binghamton) and Ellen Weeks (Bristol Harbor GC) who both shot a 7-over 79.
The top Western New York golfer currently is Vaso Kroto (Tan Tara GC, North Tonawanda). She is tied for seventh with a 10-over 82.
Kroto shot a double-bogey on the 16th hole but recovered by shooting par on her last two holes.
The tournament concludes Wednesday with the second round.
