Griff, Bona opponents named for Boca Classic

Canisius men’s basketball will meet Mercer and St. Bonaventure will face the University of San Diego in the neutral-site round games of the Boca Raton Beach Classic on Sunday, Dec. 1 in the Abessinio Court at FAU Arena.

Tip off for Canisius-Mercer will be at noon. Bona and USD will meet at 9 p.m.

Hofstra and Holy Cross are also in the Naismith Bracket with Canisius and will meet at 3 p.m. on Dec. 1. In the Hall of Fame Bracket, UIC will meet host FAU at 6 p.m.

The championship and third-place games of each bracket will be played on Dec. 2.

Canisius and Bona each will play four games in the Classic. The Griffs will play UIC in Chicago on Nov. 26 and play the fourth game at FAU on Dec. 4 in campus round games. The Bonnies will be home to Mercer on Nov. 26 and host Hofstra on Dec. 7. On that day, Bona will honor the 50th anniversary of its 1970 Final Four team as well as commemorate the centennial of its first game.

The Golden Griffins have never met UIC, Mercer and FAU in men’s basketball.

UIC of the Horizon League was 16-16 last season. Mercer of the Southern Conference was 11-20 while FAU of Conference-USA was 17-16. San Diego was 21-15, advanced to the championship game of the West Coast Conference tournament losing to Saint Mary’s and played in the National Invitation Tournament.
