Philip S, Chamot, who began a career in law as a state trooper and continued as an attorney, died Aug. 3 in Northgate Health Care Facility, Wheatfield. He was 78.
Born in Buffalo, he was a 1959 graduate of Williamsville High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo and a master’s degree from the University at Albany.
Mr. Chamot served with the State Police for 22 years, retiring as a captain in 1984. He was assistant director of training at the New York State Police Academy.
After completing a juris doctor degree at UB, he worked in the office of the corporate counsel at the former Marine Midland Bank, then began private practice in Lockport. He was associated for nine years with the firm of Hogan, Jones and Brooks and for 16 years with the Pope Law Firm. He retired in 2013.
A Lockport resident since 1978, he was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Lockport Council 319 and Lockport Assembly 754, Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Retired State Troopers Association.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Ellen Fromm; four daughters, Mary Mulrain, Patrice Loomis, Elizabeth Hammond and Emily Matthews; a son, Stephen; a brother, Duane; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, in St. John the Baptist Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport.
