Man captured after swimming across lower Niagara River from Canada

Police reported that they captured a 27-year-old man in Lewiston after he reportedly swam across the lower Niagara River recently, trying to avoid deportation back to his native Albania from Canada.

A resident of Lower River Road contacted authorities around 11:45 p.m. Aug. 3 to report that a man had just walked through his backyard carrying a waterproof bag, having emerged from a wet dock area along the riverfront. The man reportedly asked "where the road was," as well as where The Brickyard restaurant was located.

When police located the suspect inside the Brickyard, he reportedly told them he was no longer welcome in Canada and was to be deported back to his native Albania. Robert Cutaj, of Etobicoke, Ont., was taken into custody by the Border Patrol pending further investigation of his claims.
