Free fishing and campground discounts aim to boost tourism in Lake Ontario region

Free fishing on Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River and the Lower Niagara River and a 50% discount on state campground and vehicle entrance fees along the lake and river are part of a new initiative by the state to boost tourism in the Lake Ontario region.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Thursday said the launch of the new campaign follows recent flooding that depressed tourism in shoreline communities. Cuomo said a new television ad that will be airing in several neighboring states will also help to promote the new campaign.

In the wake of the recent flooding, the Lake Ontario area requires a boost in promotion to get word out about the regional asset, he said in a statement Thursday.

The governor also announced that the state will provide over $5 million to modernize the Salmon River Fish Hatchery in Oswego County.
