O'Connell & Company theater group moving to Tonawanda

The O'Connell & Company theater group is moving to a former elementary school in the Town of Tonawanda.

The company is moving from the Park School in Amherst to the Philip Sheridan school, 3200 Elmwood Ave., which is being revived as a community hub and senior apartments under the KenTon Elmwood Commons name.

O'Connell & Company said Thursday the move is effective Sept. 1. The theater group has been at the Park School for the past six years.

Mary Kate O'Connell, artistic and executive director, said the company has grown enough that it needs the larger Philip Sheridan auditorium. O'Connell & Company plans to offer a full slate of plays, musicals, concerts and other events at its new home, beginning with "Young Frankenstein" in October to launch its 25th season,

KenTon Elmwood Commons project manager John Duerr recently said he was negotiating to bring in a theater company. CMS Rentals plans a $30 million development, including renovations of the existing school building and construction of new apartments.
