24-year-old Jamestown man drowns in Lake Erie

A Jamestown man drowned at around 4:25 p.m. Friday while swimming in Lake Erie near Westfield, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.

The body of John R. Penhollow, 24, was recovered from Barcelona Harbor by the Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team.

According to the Dunkirk Observer, Chautauqua County Director of Emergency Services John Griffith said three people were swimming in a restricted area between the two breakwalls, and that Penhollow’s companions called authorities after he went under water and didn’t come back up. Griffith also said there are strong undercurrents in that area, which is why it is restricted from swimming.

Also responding were the Westfield Police Department, Westfield Fire Department, Chautauqua County Medic, Chautauqua County Fire Police, Fuller Hose Company No. 1 and the Coast Guard.

An investigation was continuing.
