One teenager was killed and another wounded during a shooting early Saturday on Briscoe Avenue near Walden Avenue, in the city's Schiller Park neighborhood.
A 17-year-old boy from Buffalo was taken to Erie County Medical Center for what investigators first described as serious injuries, according to Michael J. DeGeorge, a police spokesman. He was later pronounced dead at ECMC, DeGeorge said.
A 15-year-old boy from West Seneca also was wounded in the gunfire and was transported to Oishei Children's Hospital, where he was treated and released.
A nearby resident, Heaven Jones, said she heard "seven or eight shots" when the gunfire erupted at about 12:50 a.m.
"We had a little bonfire. Everything was cool, and then we heard gunshots," said Nyshon Ross, another resident.
Ross said he saw a female detective gathering shell casings in a driveway beside 30 Briscoe at about 3 a.m.
Jones said a victim, whom she believed to be the boy who died, fell to the ground near a dead tree in front of 14 Briscoe.
"We were all running, but we didn't see anybody connected with the shooting," Jones said.
Another resident, who declined to be identified, said he "heard everything," but didn't want to talk about it.
"I love my city. I don't want my children to be part of this," the man said.
"It usually never happens here," Ross said.
No other details about the shooting were provided by police Saturday.
