The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a telephone scam in which the caller attempts to lure people into revealing personal information.
According to information released earlier this week by the Sheriff's Office, the caller claims to be a representative from National Grid who promises to give discounts on a customer's electric bills, but only in exchange for personal information such as a Social Security number or account information.
On Friday, the Sheriff's Office warned of a scam from a person claiming to be a representative of New York State Electric & Gas. Other elements of the scam are the same.
If such a call is received, residents are encouraged to call their local police agency.
The two area codes of the reported calls are from 808 and 718, the Sheriff's Office said.
Residents are being advised to not release any information or return calls to these callers and to contact their local police agencies instead.
