The GIRLS Sports Foundation is hosting its first free sports camp, for girls ages 8 to 18, from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday at Masten Park.
The camp will offer basketball, soccer, swimming, lacrosse, track and field and mentoring.
A kickoff and camp orientation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the park, where parents can register and get more information. The camp can accept up to 200 girls.
The GIRLS Sports Foundation is run by Cecelie Owens, principal at West Hertel Academy, who was named an “Everyday Hero” last year by espnW – the sports network's multi-platform brand dedicated to inspiring women – for her efforts to provide opportunities for girls in sports.
The foundation was recently awarded program funding from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, Adidas, the African-American Cultural Center, former Erie County Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams and others.
