Babysitter whose pit bull attacked toddler sentenced to probation

A Buffalo woman whose pit bull attacked and seriously injured a 13-month-old girl has been sentenced by Buffalo City Court Judge Kevin J. Keane to three years probation, according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office.

On Jan. 13, 30-year-old Amber R. Lewis was babysitting the girl at a home in the 300 block of Watson Street when the attack occurred. The toddler was hospitalized for injuries to her head, face and stomach.

Prosecutors said Lewis owned three pit bulls. Two were seized afterwards. Last summer, a dog belonging to Lewis attacked a neighbor's dog and Lewis was ordered to surrender the animal, but never did, according to police.

In April, Lewis pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Keane also issued an order of protection requiring Lewis to have no contact with the toddler victim and her mother for five years.
