A burglar left a trail of blood throughout two businesses on Sawyer Drive in Wheatfield late Thursday after smashing out rear windows to gain entry, Niagara County sheriff's deputies reported.
Around 11:15 p.m., officers responded to the offices of Dr. Mike's Furry Friends Small Animal Hospital, 2115 Sawyer Drive, and an adjoining dental practice. Nothing was believed to have been stolen from either business, although deputies said that several containers of pills had been knocked over and left out of place inside each building.
Officers found splatters of blood on the walls, floors and drawers of the businesses, indicating that the burglar was apparently cut while breaking in. Deputies said that there were indications that the intruder went through an area containing hypodermic syringes and bottles of low-level controlled substances within the animal hospital, but none of those items appeared to be missing. An investigation is continuing.
