OFF, Edward R.

OFF - Edward R. 87, a lifelong resident of Cheektowaga, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Syracuse, NY on Friday, June 7, 2019. Born in Sloan, NY, on March 8, 1932. Ed was the son of Edward A. and Sophie (Burkhartt) Off. Ed was one of five children. Surviving Ed are his brothers George (Ellen) Off of Hamburg, NY; Richard (Margaret) Off of Cheektowaga, NY and sister Marge (Albert) Yacono of Baltimore, MD. He was predeceased by his brother Raymond Off on November 11, 2006. Ed graduated from Amherst Central High School. He served as a Specialist 3rd Class of the NY Army National Guard, 27th Infantry Division, from October 1947 to October 1958. He then went on to a career as a Patrolman with National Fuel Gas Company for over 37 years, retiring in 1994. On May 24, 1958, Ed married his lifelong love Gladys Marie McGorray. Gladys predeceased him on November 1, 1995. Ed is survived by his sons, Robert (Judy) Off and Charles (Michelle) Off; daughters Loretta Off, Jean (Mark) Antzak and Shirley (Stephen) Majewski; he is also survived by grandchildren Amanda and Sophie Off, Steven, Vickie and Rebecca Cosgrove, Kayla, Chelsea and Charles Off, Jr., Stephen (Christine) Majewski and Robert Majewski. Ed has one great-grandson, Jack Finn Carmel. Ed "Bob" had always enjoyed bowling and the challenges of repairing everything from appliances to engines of all sorts including repairing all the cars that he owned throughout his driving years. He had quite the reputation as a "tinkerer" and was very successful with his mechanical abilities. He spent much of the last twenty summers enjoying the beautiful surroundings of his family cottage on Chautauqua Lake with the company of family and friends. He became an avid bingo player with his daughters later in life and really enjoyed the fellowship shared with family and friends during those outings. A Memorial Service for Ed will be held Saturday, June 22, at 11:00 AM at the Grace In Community Church, 11269 Broadway, Alden, NY 14004. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Edward's memory to the American Cancer Society.
