Painters Plus, a North Tonawanda painting firm, will paint a city resident's house for free on Aug. 31.
The ninth consecutive year of Project HOPE, standing for "Helping Others Paint Exteriors," was announced Friday.
By Aug. 16, residents may apply by writing a short paragraph about their situation and attaching photos of the outside of their home. This can be done at the Painters Plus website; by mail to the company at 800 Walck Road, North Tonawanda, NY 14120; or on a form available at City Hall or the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas.
Company owner Jesse P. Gooch, a Niagara County legislator, said the contest grew from his desire to quell housing blight.
"My question is, ‘Are these people neglecting their homes or do they want to improve their homes but don’t have the physical or financial means?' " Gooch said. "I believe that in many cases it’s not neglect and that’s what drove me to start and continue with the Painters Plus project."
