Sorority to celebrate anniversary at gala Saturday

The Gamma Phi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority will hold a Pink Diamond Gala from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, 153 Franklin St.

The event celebrates the 75th anniversary of the sorority, according to its organizers, and will recognize its decades of community service to Western New York — which includes its biennial debutante program, annual Sweetheart Luncheon at selected local churches and its Salute to Veterans, during which a meal is provided to military veterans on the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday.

Alpha Kappa Alpha, which is headquartered in Chicago, was incorporated 111 years ago and today has over 300,000 members internationally.

The Gamma Phi Omega Chapter of the sorority was chartered in June 1944.
