After winning at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association regatta in St. Catharines, Ontario, on Sunday, the Canisius High senior lightweight four will travel to Sarasota, Fla., on Thursday to compete in the US Rowing Youth National Championships.
The four of Nathaniel Sass, Zach Mecca, Charlie Korn, Zachary Porter and coxswain John Weckerle won their event in 7 minutes, 2.39 seconds in St. Catharines, crossing the line nearly 5 seconds in front of the E.L. Crossley boat.
Nathaniel Sass, Mecca, Korn, and Porter joined Dylan Sass, Max Battaglia, Aidan Hart-Nova, Nate Siwiec and coxswain Owen Wittman to capture a silver medal in the senior lightweight eights.
Other Buffalo area crews earned medals in the CSSRA Regatta:
• Nardin’s senior lightweight eight earned gold.
• Mount St. Mary junior lightweight four earned silver.
• St. Joe’s junior lightweight four earned bronze.
OP’s Fischer places 15th
The Section VI finished fourth among 11 teams on Monday, the final day of the State Public Schools Boys Golf Championship at the Cornell University Robert Trent Jones course in Ithaca.
Eighth-grader Charlie Fischer of Orchard Park was the top individual finisher among nine Section VI golfers. Fischer shot 5-over-par 76 in his second round on Monday for an overall 154 score and 15th place. He had two birdies in his round.
Nathan Han of Somers (Section I, Westchester County) won with 71-70-141.
After Fischer, the best Section VI finish was 24th by Mitch Jeffe of East Aurora/Holland with 77-80-157.
Aidan Shaw of Orchard Park shot 74, equalling the best round of the day by other than Han.
Shaw, however, had an 84 on Sunday for a 158 total and 27th place.
Junior Ian Wagner of Medina matched Fischer’s 76 round on Monday and finished 38th in the field of 99 golfers with 163.
