Outdoor summer fitness classes now underway

It may seem like winter just left us in Western New York, but here’s a sure sign that summer will soon arrive – free outdoor group fitness have started.

The region’s two largest health insurers announced last week that a new slate of weather-dependent classes – many of them new, and three of them in new venues – started Saturday.

BlueCross BlueShield of WNY has expanded its offerings at Canalside to more that 30 classes that started May 25.

New classes – including Rise Fitness Pilates, BikeorBar HIIT, Kids Get Moving, Boxstar Training and several yoga stylings – will bolster the popular Zumba, boot camps and dance classes that have come to define summertime fitness along the Buffalo waterfront.

Classes run through Labor Day.

Meanwhile, Independent Health and YMCA Buffalo Niagara have teamed up for the eighth annual Fitness in the Parks at more than 20 sites across the region. Three are new: LaSalle Park on the West Side, Legends Park in Niagara Falls, and the ADPRO Sports Training Center at New Era Field in Orchard Park.

Weekly classes will run through Aug. 24.

A calendar of Fitness at Canalside classes is available at bcbswny.com/play.
