Latino Veterans seeks nominees for honor at annual race

Organizers of the third annual Latino Veterans 8K Race and Family Walk are seeking nominations of a deceased Latino veteran in whose memory the race will be dedicated.

Latino Veterans said last year’s race was dedicated to the memory of John Ponce, a Marine Corps captain who served in Vietnam. The group is dedicated to honoring heroes by telling their stories and will use the proceeds of the race to memorialize them in a planned Latino Veterans Museum, as well as to award scholarships to children of Latino veterans.

To nominate a Latino veteran, email an essay describing his or her service to the military, family and community to by July 4, using the subject line “Latino Veteran Honoree.” The honored veteran’s biography will be read at the trophy ceremony after the race.

This year's race will start at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8 in front of Hispanics United of Buffalo, Latino Veterans announced Thursday in a press conference outside HUB's Virginia Street headquarters.
