CILANO - Karen (Cookie)
Karen (Cookie) Cilano, 76, passed peacefully at home on 17 May. Born and raised in Buffalo, Karen got her
nickname Cookie from her paternal uncles, who called her mom, Emily Palicki, Blondie (her father, Joseph
Kandefer, Sr, was not Dagwood but Honey). Karen graduated from Sloan High School and Trocaire College. She met Vincent, her future husband, at Canisius College in spring 1961 while pursuing her nursing degree. They married three years later and raised a family. Eventually they made their home in North Boston, NY, in a house she dreamed of and Vincent built. Her love and abilities were evident in the beautiful gardens she maintained there. Karen was a member of the Hamburg Garden Club and a gifted watercolor painter. Known for her quiet confidence, extraordinary competency, kindness, humility, and generosity, Karen was a trusted nurse at Mercy Hospital's ER, the MACC, and the Cardiology Group of WNY. Quite an adventurer, Karen traveled to Thailand, Egypt, Europe, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States. As daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, Karen was much adored. We will carry her with us always. She is survived by her husband Vincent; her children Marc (Sheri), Lisa, Christopher (Heidi), Todd (Lesley), and Cara; her grandchildren Samuel, Sofia,
Benjamin, Nicholas, Vincenzo, and Carolyn; her siblings Joseph (Marie) Kandefer, Jr, and Candice Gerrity; her
brothers-in-law Nicholas Cilano and Ralph Bavaro; six nieces; and several great nephews and nieces.
