Shoplifting suspects allegedly hide loot in a wheelchair

Two people were arrested Saturday after they allegedly tried to leave a store with 20 items stashed in a wheelchair, Town of Niagara Police reported.

Berten E. Garlic, 51, and Nicole C. Cain, 43, who both gave addresses on South Avenue in Niagara Falls, were charged with petit larceny and third-degree burglary after they were stopped about 2:30 p.m. at the Walmart Supercenter, 1540 Military Road. Police said the items allegedly found in Cain’s wheelchair were valued at $153.

Police said they imposed the burglary counts because Garlic and Cain had been banned from the store following previous shoplifting incidents.
