India native, active Amherst Democrat reports receiving vile note

An active member of the Amherst Democratic Party and the local Indian American community reported receiving a vulgar note objecting to his ethnicity and political leanings.

Sibu Nair, campaign manager for an Erie County Legislature candidate, told police he found the note in his Eggertsville mailbox April 22 and friends encouraged him to report it.

"Take your brown army and leave our town. Watch out. Stop promoting Democrats," reads the anonymous note, which included a skull and crossbones and an obscenity Nair blurred to share it online. WNY Media Network initially reported on Nair's post and the letter.

"I think they're just trying to shut me down," said the medical researcher who is married with two children. Nair said the note won't stop his community involvement and doesn't reflect how welcome he's felt since moving here from India in 2005.

Nair reported the note April 27. Detectives are investigating and police have patrolled on Nair's street and near the Hindu Cultural Center, but no arrest has been made, said Assistant Amherst Police Chief Charles Cohen.
