"Tootsie," a musical based on the Tony nominated play, will launch its national tour in Shea's Buffalo Theatre in the fall of 2020.
Specific dates and ticket information will be announced. However, "Tootsie" will be in Buffalo the month before opening for technical rehearsals as part of a state tax credit program. Other shows at Shea's that benefited from this program are "Finding Neverland," "On Your Feet" and "Mean Girls," which opens in Shea's on Sept. 21.
Loosely based on the 1982 Oscar-winning comedy starring Dustin Hoffman, "Tootsie" is the story of an out-of-work actor who dons a female disguise to get a big gig - in this case, a role in a musical.
A Variety review lauded "Tootsie" in an April review stating "The new Broadway adaptation of 'Tootsie' is old-fashioned and proud of it — and it’s a surefire crowd-pleaser, in this musical spin on the 1982 film comedy with Santino Fontana in the Dustin Hoffman role."
"Tootsie" has a book by Robert Horn ("13," "Dame Edna, Back with a Vengeance"), original score by David Yazbek ("The Band's Visit," "The Full Monty"), choreography by Denis Jones and music direction by Andrea Grody. The Broadway production is directed by Scott Ellis. The musical received the 2019 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for best musical and won two Outer Critics Circle Awards (best actor in a musical for Santino Fontana and Best Book of a Musical). It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and 12 Drama Desk Awards. For info on "Tootsie," visit tootsiemusical.com.
