Nobel Prize winner among Niagara University commencement speakers

A Nobel Prize-winning economist, an Olympic gold medalist and a retired general are the keynote speakers at Niagara University's commencement ceremonies.

Economist William Nordhaus of Yale University will speak at graduate commencement at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Artpark's Mainstage Theater, Lewiston.

Sarah Hughes, a 2002 Olympic champion in figure skating at age 16, will address the bachelor's degree earners from the colleges of Education, Business Administration and Hospitality and Tourism Management at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Artpark. A graduate of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Hughes has been active in philanthropy.

Gen. Walter Kross, whose 34-year Air Force career included three Distinguished Flying Crosses, will address the other undergraduates at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Artpark.

Honorary degree recipients include Dorothy Gallagher, president and CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, and Eileen Whalen, president and CEO of the University of Vermont Medical Center and a Niagara graduate. Darren Brown-Hall, Buffalo Public Schools chief of staff and district clerk, will receive the university’s Caritas Medal.
