The Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jessica Ramos of Queens, should pass.
An eight-hour work day, overtime pay rate, a day off and collective bargaining is something most of us expect of our employers. This bill is a matter of human rights.
Will we see a change in the farmworker’s living conditions? Here in Western New York Southtowns, it’s easy to see workers’ squalid conditions. Just take a ride down any main road here or any other farm community: a small house w/garbage overflowing, outside hoses for water, Porta-John for a bathroom, floor space for sleeping maybe a few thin mattresses.
It’s time to stop turning a blind eye to the working conditions of these vital employees in our great country.
