WKBW-TV (Channel 7) sports director Joe Buscaglia will be leaving the station after his contract runs out in August but will continue to contribute to its coverage of the Buffalo Bills.
A SUNY Buffalo State graduate, Buscaglia joined Channel 7 four years ago from WGR radio, where he had developed a reputation by covering the National Football League draft. He became Channel 7 sports director almost three years ago.
According to sources, he is headed to The Athletic, a subscription sports website that has an imprint in Buffalo and has hired many local and national sportswriters and sportscasters. He will likely join its coverage of the Bills.
Buscaglia will continue to contribute to Bills coverage for Channel 7 in a similar way that former Buffalo News sportswriter Tim Graham contributes to Bills coverage at WIVB-TV (Channel 4) while working for The Athletic.
Buscaglia will be replaced as sports director by Matt Bove. Bove is a Buffalo State graduate (full disclosure: He took one of my classes at Buffalo State) who has been in the No. 2 position in the sports department and has impressed covering the Buffalo Sabres with a natural on-air style.
Bove, 26, joined Channel 7 in 2013, became a general assignment news reporter in 2014 and moved to the sports department in 2016.
Weekend sports anchor Jenna Callari will soon be joined on the Channel 7 sports team by a sports broadcaster replacing Buscaglia to be named later.
“We are thrilled that Joe will be an on-air contributor to our Bills coverage this fall,” said Channel 7 General Manager Michael Nurse. “He is a top-notch sports journalist. We are very fortunate to have such a strong candidate in Matt Bove to step up to sports director this fall. Matt is extremely dedicated and hard working and incredibly genuine. He has a passion for WNY sports that is infectious.”
