VA settles wrongful death case of man who died of infection after surgery

The federal government will pay $300,000 to the family of a man who died at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Buffalo, according to court records.

The settlement, approved by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo, ends a civil lawsuit claiming Larry Farley, an Erie County resident, died because of medical malpractice and negligence.

Farley, according to the suit, died Aug. 13, 2016, following surgery that led to a fatal infection.

In their suit, which sought $1.25 million from the government, Farley's family said the medical center failed to properly diagnose and treat the infection.

The settlement followed court-order mediation.
