Aside from the weather, the Buffalo Bisons had a sunny start to their eight-game homestand. But after winning the first four contests, the Herd could very well do no better than posting a .500 mark before leaving on another road trip.
A former Bison sent the Herd to their third straight loss as Gift Ngoepe’s three-run double in the eighth gave Lehigh Valley the lead for good in a 5-3 victory Saturday afternoon in the International League at Sahlen Field.
Ngoepe pulled a two-bagger to left while trailing in the count 1-2. That foiled the Bisons’ attempt at protecting a lead it had just taken a half inning earlier.
Buffalo trailed 2-1 in the seventh when it had a chance to blow the game open. The Herd loaded the bases with no outs as Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Cavan Biggio hit back-to-back singles with Andy Burns following with a walk. Anthony Alford’s ground out plated Gurriel and led to a pitching change. Patrick Cantwell greeted Yacksel Rios. A sac fly to right from Roemon Fields brought home Biggio with the go-ahead run. However, Andy Burns tried to score on the play, too, and was thrown out at home to end the inning.
A walk by Deivy Grullon, double by Lane Adams and walk by Matt McBride set the stage for Ngoepe in the eighth. Ngoepe hit .168 in 48 games with the Bisons last year. in the eighth. Reliever Javy Guerra took the loss.
The Bisons struck first with Alford belting a solo homer to left in the second inning.
The IronPigs responded with a solo shot from Shane Robinson in the third. They pushed another run across to take the lead in the fourth on Matt McBride’s bases-loaded walk.
The loss foiled a nice start by Sean Reid-Foley, who struck out six in six innings but came away with a no-decision
The homestand closes Sunday at 1:05 p.m. against the IronPigs. The game will feature an appearance from popular children’s character, Peppa Pig.
