DeSales Catholic School in Lockport announced it will break ground June 27 for an art center on its Chestnut Ridge Road campus, to be named in honor of 1958 DeSales graduate Nunzio T. Maiorana.
The $125,000 project, to be completed by September, will enhance the art program at the school, which now houses kindergarten through eighth grade. DeSales Catholic was a high school in Maiorana's day.
He spent most of his career as a teacher and administrator in the Medina Central School District, but Maiorana, who died in January 2018, also was a self-taught artist who specialized in pen-and-ink drawings of historic lighthouses and buildings all over the world.
He used jeweler’s glasses to produce works containing more than 500,000 fine lines and dots. He won his first art show in 1957 sponsored by the Lockport Industrial Management Club.
Maiorana's widow is providing much of the funding for the center, but the school also is seeking donations.
