Mexican restaurant taking place of Shenannigans in Amherst

A restaurant promising authentically prepared Mexican food is set to open within a week in the former Shenannigans Bar & Grill in Amherst.

Fernando Guzman, his father and an uncle are opening El Toro Mexican Grill and Bar at 1009 Niagara Falls Blvd., where a host of restaurants have come and gone over the years – Barnaby's, Buffalo Tap Room and Grill, Thai Bistro and Neon Thai. Shenannigans closed in April 2018.

Guzman said El Toro will have a similar look and menu to the partners' restaurant near Pittsburgh, Casa Nayarit Mexican Grill, which offers quesadillas, burritos, chimichangas and other familiar fare.

His family is from Mexico and Guzman grew up in South Carolina before moving to Pittsburgh and, now, to Buffalo. Another Guzman uncle, Armando Audelo, who isn't involved in El Toro, operates El Ranchito restaurants in Clarence and Amherst.

Guzman said El Toro recently received its liquor license and he expects the restaurant to open late this week or early next week.
