Buffalo police identify city's latest homicide victim

The Buffalo Police Department has released the name of the man killed last Thursday morning in a shooting on East Amherst Street.

Deqwaun Newkirk, 31, was shot about 6 a.m. inside a vehicle that crashed into a fence and then a vacant house near the intersection of East Amherst and Suffolk streets, police said. He died at the scene.

The police department has not said what potential motive may be behind the killing.

Police ask anyone with information to call or text the department's confidential tip line at 847-2255.

Newkirk is the city's ninth homicide victim of the year.
