Man burned in Orchard Park fire in critical condition

A man seriously burned at a North Benzing Road business Wednesday afternoon is in critical condition, according to Orchard Park Police.

The call, which came in at 1:12 p.m., reported a person and a vehicle were on fire at Buffalo & Orchard Park Topsoil. Paramedics were working on the 33-year-old man when police arrived, and he was taken to Erie County Medical Center.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but police said it is believed to be an industrial accident caused by an acetylene torch.

The building, which is located just north of Quaker Crossing retail center, was a total loss, but damage estimates were not available.

The fire sent thick, black smoke over Route 219 that could be seen as far away as Springville and Buffalo.

Windom, Orchard Park, Hillcrest, Newton Abbott, Big Tree, Hamburg, Seneca Hose and Armor fire companies responded, as well as the Erie County Hazmat team and the state Department of Conservation.
