Police: Man asks deputy question, drives off, gets arrested on DWI charges

A man who "made an inquiry" of a deputy and then allegedly drove off erratically was arrested Sunday for felony driving while intoxicated, according to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office.

John R. Benton, 61, of Darien was arrested on charges of felony DWI, felony DWI with previous conviction and failure to keep right.

The deputy suspected Benton may have been intoxicated, then "observed Benton unable to maintain his lane of travel and conducted a traffic stop," the release stated, which listed the location of the incident as Tinkham Road in Darien.

Benton was arrested and transported to the Genesee County Jail for processing and was released. He is scheduled to appear at Darien Town Court on May 7.
