Erie Canal Clean Sweep set for this weekend

Volunteers will be hard at work this weekend along the Erie Canal and other canals in New York State, during the 14th annual Canal Clean Sweep program, organized by the state Canal Corp. and Parks & Trails New York, as well as local governments and private groups.

In North Tonawanda, city officials have organized a spring cleaning event along the canal starting at 9 a.m. Saturday in Mayor's Park on Sweeney Street. A City of Tonawanda event starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Gateway Harbor Park. A Lockport event, sponsored by Windsor Village Artisan and Antique Market, starts at 8:30 a.m. near the Stevens Street Bridge.

Also Saturday, private groups have set up cleanup events in Middleport and Medina. Sunday cleanups also have been announced by groups in North Tonawanda and Albion. The location and schedule for all events is listed at the Parks & Trails website.
