On-board security system rats out car thieves

NIAGARA FALLS – Note to criminals: Don't steal cars with big mouths.

A man and two juveniles were arrested inside a stolen car Friday after police were led to the exact location of the vehicle by its on-board safety and security tracking system.

A Niagara Avenue woman contacted police around 6 a.m. Friday after noticing that her 2019 Chevrolet Equinox had been stolen from the 2400 block of Ontario Avenue. She had hidden her spare set of keys inside a nearby residence and discovered that those keys also were missing. After reporting the theft to police, she contacted representatives of the On-Star system, which tracked the location of the vehicle to the intersection of B and D streets in the city.

Police went to the location and found the car occupied by three suspects.

Davon T. Cook, 21, of Ninth Street was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. The juveniles were to be petitioned to Family Court.
