University at Buffalo senior standouts Nick Perkins and CJ Massinburg will participate in this week’s Portmouth Invitational Tournament where collegiate players display their talent for NBA scouts.
The UB stars will not be on the same team, however. Perkins is on the roster of the K&D Rounds Landscape team which will play in the tournament opener at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Churchland High School Sports Complex in Portsmouth, Va. Massinburg is on the Portsmouth Partnership team which will play its first game at 9 p.m. on Thursday.
Each of the eight eight-player teams will play three games in the tournament which will wind up Saturday night. Perkins’ teammates will include Fletcher Magee of Wofford and Josh Perkins of Gonzaga. Massinburg is one of four guards on his team. Others are Chris Clemons (Campbell), Garrison Mathews (Lipscomb) and Nick Weiler-Babb (Iowa State).
The PIT has been a fixture on the postseason scene since 1953. The record for most points in a tournament is 107 in 1965 by future NBA star Rick Barry of the Miami (Fla.).
