Work has begun to either repair or replace 13 large culverts along roadways in Erie and Chautauqua counties, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The $2.8 million project is aimed at ensuring water flows through the culverts, which is intended to enhance safety for motorists and to reduce flooding risks, state officials said Monday.
A culvert will be replaced on Route 75 in North Collins in Erie County and one on Route 5 in the Chautauqua County Town of Portland. Traffic along those routes will be reduced to a single lane. A culvert will be replaced on Route 62 in the Village of North Collins. Culvert repairs are scheduled along I-86 in the towns of Mina and Ellery in Chautauqua County, Route 20 in Westfield in Chautauqua County and along Route 75 in North Collins.
State transportation officials said the work is part of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's commitment to building a 21st century transportation infrastructure aimed at improving the flow of people and commerce throughout the region.
