Former corrections officer charged with stealing inmate's medication

A former Genesee County corrections officer was arrested Monday on theft and drug charges in the theft of an inmate's prescribed medication, according to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office.

Justin M. Gugel, 30, faces charges of petit larceny and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance when he is arraigned May 7 in Batavia City Court.

While employed at the Genesee County Jail, Gugel allegedly stole medication that was prescribed and allotted for an inmate there, according to the Sheriff's Office.

An investigation was launched in January after the pills were reported missing following a routine medication count in the jail, the Sheriff's Office said.
