Erie County DA hosts youth forum on gun violence

Students were warned about the danger of gangs and guns Saturday morning as Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn hosted his office's first “Community Conversation Regarding Gun Violence” in Bennett High School.

A panel featured Arlee Daniels, program coordinator for Stop the Violence Coalition; Dr. Fred Gelsey, a father who lost his son due to gang violence; police officer Mark Hamilton; and former gang member-turned-entrepreneur Eric Rawls.

Lorenzo Alexander of the Buffalo Bills, in a video, urged teens to pursue their dreams. The panel talked about the dangers of gang interaction and the consequences of entering a life of crime. The session was part of a pilot program supported by a grant from the state Division of Criminal Justice Services.
