A woman who said she was out on a garbage-picking run was arrested on drug charges and traffic violations Friday after her vehicle struck a telephone pole on Syracuse Street in the City of Tonawanda, according to City of Tonawanda Police.
Police said Amy A. Okiec, 54, was placing an air conditioner she had scavenged from the curb into the front seat of her running vehicle when she accidentally struck the gear shift, sending the vehicle into reverse, causing it to strike the telephone pole.
Police investigating the crash reported finding numerous narcotics inside the vehicle, including crystal methamphetamine rocks, crack cocaine, pills, hydrocodine, hydrochloride and crack pipes.
Okiec was charged with five counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and four traffic violations.
Police said Okiec told officers she had smoked crack at 3 a.m. before going garbage-picking.
