Ruth I. Swenson, 94, retired elementary school teacher

May 4, 1924 – March 25, 2019

Ruth I. Swenson, of Amherst, a retired elementary school teacher, died March 25 in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga. She was 94.

Born in South Buffalo, the former Ruth Isabel Christman attended School 67, was a 1942 graduate of South Park High School and a 1945 graduate of Buffalo State Teachers College.

The mother of two, she taught kindergarten for 32 years in Eggertsville and Snyder schools. She retired in 1987.

Mrs. Swenson was an officer in the Beechwood Service Guild and was a founding member of Christ United Methodist Church in Snyder. She also volunteered with several community groups.

She was a member of the College Club of Buffalo, the P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Sisterhood and Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority.

She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, reading, music, painting, bird-watching and gardening.

She accompanied her husband of 73 years, William W., an engineer for Bell Aerosystems, when he was transferred to Seattle, Houston and Wildwood, Fla., to work on the manned spaceflight program.

“We had astronauts as neighbors in Texas,” her husband said, “including Neil Armstrong.”

Survivors also include a daughter, Melinda M.; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be private.
