Niagara University and Leadership Niagara want to 'Halt Hate'

Niagara University is asking local residents to "Halt Hate" Tuesday, in hopes that it might become a trend.

The university’s Rev. Joseph L. Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement and Leadership Niagara last week asked local residents to use Tuesday to "respond compassionately to situations that they encounter in their everyday lives, to consciously seek to understand, to practice tolerance, and to gain perspective."

"The climate of social discourse in the world today is overwhelmingly vitriolic," said Liz Zulawski, president and CEO of Leadership Niagara. "Together, we aim to spearhead a movement beginning with 24 hours, with the potential to evolve into two days, one month, even one year dedicated to halting hate."

Participants are asked to use the Twitter hashtag #HALTHATE to share their stories on how they did.
