Women's History Month program honors 'remarkable' women

Several local women were recognized Friday during the annual Women's History Month program in the lobby of Buffalo City Hall.

In keeping with the national theme – "Visionary Women: Champions of Peace & Nonviolence" – Mayor Byron W. Brown honored the following  "remarkable" women:

  • Mary Travers Murphy, chief executive director of the Family Justice Center
  • Rhonda A. Ricks, Ph.D., president of R+A+R Development
  • Jody Covington, principal of Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts
  • Win Min Thant, coordinator of education programs at SUNY Buffalo State College's Community Academic Center
  • Victoria Ross, executive director of the WNY Peace Center
  • Julissa Vazquez, community health worker and doula manager at the Priscilla Project of Buffalo
  • Mary B. Talbert (1866-1923), civil rights activist, suffragist, preservationist, international human rights proponent and educator
