Royalton drunken driver avoids state prison in fatal crash

A Royalton man who was drunk Sept. 15 when his vehicle plowed into a parked car near his home, killing a woman standing next to the car, was sentenced Thursday to six months in Niagara County Jail to begin a five-year probation term.

Nathaniel J. Miles, 23, of Chestnut Ridge Road, pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court to second-degree vehicular manslaughter in the death of Maryann Beccari, 58, of Ransomville.

She had just gotten out of the car driven by her daughter, Taylor McCall, to clean bugs off the windshield, the victim's family said. The impact knocked the auto into Beccari, who died at Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport.

The family agreed to the plea deal.

"Our mom was a woman of forgiveness and second chances," said another daughter, Janine Burick.
