Meeting to address rising Buffalo property values – and taxes

A town hall meeting on a proposed law to protect low- and moderate-income Buffalo homeowners from steep property tax increases following the ongoing reassessment will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave.

Community groups sponsoring the meeting say homes in parts of the East Side, for example, are selling for two to three times their value at the last assessment, and that new property taxes pegged to these higher valuations could be a significant burden on some homeowners, "possibly even forcing some families from their homes."

The groups have been working on a proposal to grant partial property tax exemptions to income-qualified homeowners facing steep increases. They will discuss the proposal at Saturday's meeting.
