NY Main Street grant applications due March 18

More than 30 property owners along Main Street and nearby streets in downtown Buffalo are interested in obtaining money for building improvements as part of the next round of New York Main Street grants from the state, according to Buffalo Place officials.

Debra Chernoff, Buffalo Place manager of planning, said she's received interest from 31 applicants to the program, which provides up to $50,000 in matching funds for renovations and facade enhancements in downtown business districts. The nonprofit business improvement district organization expects it can handle 10 to 15 individual awards with the $500,000 grant, based on its last experience covering nine projects with $300,000.

The latest round – the fourth time that Buffalo Place has received and administered one of the grants – will cover Main from Edward and Goodell streets in the north to Seneca Street. Officials already met with downtown property owners on Feb. 21 and Feb. 25, and applications are due to Buffalo Place by March 18.

"It's a really great state program," Chernoff said.
